What if everyone planted a tree?

We supported Treedom in the initial strategic phase for the design, development, and design of the new app, which allows people to plant new trees in different parts of the world. The result is a more performant, secure, and seamlessly integrated native application with major operating systems.

Much more than a tree

Treedom was founded in 2010 with the aim of building a greener and fairer world. Since then, more than four million trees have been planted in Africa, Latin America, Asia, and Italy. All the trees are planted directly by local farmers, and together with cooperatives and NGOs from around the world, they contribute to the implementation of environmental, social, and economic development projects. Treedom has decided to develop a mobile application to make it even easier and more transparent to contribute to the cause of reforesting the planet.

Outcomes

Thanks to the Treedom app, planting a tree remotely is easy and immediate. People can learn about the concrete benefits they can bring to the planet they live on and contribute by staying informed transparently about the progress of the agroforestry projects their trees are part of.

A values-driven design

The design choices for Treedom's app experience are guided by three core values:

  • Sustainability: the app features a dark interface to reduce environmental impact and safeguard our health.
  • Inclusion and diversity: illustrations and language have been chosen to embrace and represent all individuals who wish to contribute to improving the planet.
  • Transparency and evolution: Treedom's app serves as a platform where users can learn about the benefits they can bring to the planet and actively contribute to its betterment, promoting transparency and providing information on project evolution.
Design highlights of the app

A sensory connection between people and their trees

We introduced some features in the app, leveraging the capabilities of smartphones. This way, we were able to exponentially enrich the user experience by involving them through observing local weather and updating the real-time growth of their tree. This helps to foster a lasting relationship that can turn users into ambassadors.

Real and continuous communication with the user

Transparency is a crucial factor for the credibility and trust of users who have chosen to plant trees remotely with Treedom.

Through the app, communication with users is transparent and immediate, demonstrating concretely how efforts are being made to reduce environmental impact. This is achieved through the creation of dedicated sections such as the tree's life timeline, the periodic publication of blogs dedicated to agroforestry projects, and responding to user questions and comments.

updates on the tree

To increase user awareness of their carbon footprint, the app displays the amount of CO2 that the planted trees can absorb. Additionally, informative tips and advice have been created and contextualized to be shown to users, helping them adopt virtuous behaviours.

Inclusive illustrations

Treedom is a project with participants spread across the globe, involving people from diverse ethnicities. That's why we've chosen to represent our characters using neutral colors, soft shapes, and freehand strokes that transcend ethnicity, gender, and physical appearance, aiming to create a friendly and inclusive atmosphere.

The goal of these illustrations is to create an engaging visual experience, fostering a sense of familiarity and connection with users, making the app more appealing and user-friendly while also setting it apart from competitors.

End-to-end product definition

To tackle the design challenge and define a valuable concept, we adopted a participatory approach with the Treedom team in all project phases. We established a dedicated space for design coordination, front-end and back-end development, managing all processes with a lean and agile approach. Through clear communication, smooth transitions, and detailed documentation, we maintained total control over the quality of the released product, overseeing and managing all steps of the app development process.

Treedom enables people to plant trees remotely and follow the stories of the projects they contribute to. We partnered with Treedom in the strategic design of their app, conducting analysis and research activities to accelerate evolution and support the product to make it enduring, engaging, and efficient.
